Over 100 Gisborne homes lose power after car hits pole, police seeking driver who fled

More than 100 households are without power in Gisborne this morning after a car hit a power pole, bringing down the power lines.

Power company Eastland Network has posted on Facebook saying 108 customers are currently without power, with a further 173 households due to have their power turned off while crews work to replace the damaged power pole and fix the lines.

Police were notified of the crash, which happened at the intersection of Chalmers Rd and Oates St, at 6:25am. A police spokesperson told 1 NEWS the driver left the scene on foot and enquires are being made to locate him.

Police will remain on site for traffic management until the lines are fixed.

Power is expected to be restored by the early afternoon.
