Otago residents get free blood tests to see if lead in water will have chronic effects

February 9, 2021

The tests are hoped to determine if lead detected in the water supply will have any chronic effects.

Free blood tests will be rolled out today in two east Otago towns to determine whether lead in the water supply will have any chronic effects.

Elevated lead levels in Waikouaiti and Karitāne were first detected almost six months ago, with one result registering nearly 40-times the acceptable level.

A no-drink order was only issued last week after many gaffes, including a council email containing crucial details unopened for weeks.

Residents of the two towns just north of Dunedin have been warned not to use tap water until further notice.

The source of the contamination is still unknown.
