Otago in clean-up mode after heavy rain causes widespread flooding

A number of roads in the region remain closed or have warnings in place after flooding.

Heavy rain has eased across Otago overnight, with the region now in clean up mode after widespread flooding.

The Clutha District Council is warning of rising river levels this morning, however, despite less rain falling.

The Clutha River is in flood, and could rise further.

Earlier, police in Henley advised residents to evacuate their homes with many deciding to stay.

The deluge is causing headaches and concerns across the region.

Residents in Middlemarch are being urged not to drink water from private bores, due to a risk of contamination.

Businesses were also kept busy sandbagging outside their premises to keep flood water at bay.
