Otago fire spurred by gale force winds destroys three milking sheds, but cows saved

January 22, 2019

Fourteen fire trucks are currently fighting a blaze that tore through miking sheds in south Otago this afternoon.

The fire began in a pile of slash, but gale force winds caused the blaze to spread to a milking shed area on Clutha Valley Road, in Pukeawa, at 12.23pm, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1 NEWS.

Three milking sheds were destroyed in the incident, but the milking platform and cows were saved.

When crews arrived, including from as far away as Dunedin and Gore, the fire had a 200-metre front.

Gale force winds are causing dangerous conditions for crews, with reports of corrugated iron flying in the air.

The fire has since been contained, and three more crews are on their way to the scene.

There have no reports of any injuries.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, authorities said.
