It seemed like Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt was doing his part for the environment by turning in his keys in favour of a scooter.
A video of Mr Shadbolt popping out to the shops was uploaded last night to the Facebook site Only In New Zealand.
It has been viewed more than 200,000 times, "liked" 13,000 times and shared 1600 times.
The video is captioned "Mayor of Invercargill Tim Shadbolt scootering to work".
However, Mr Shadbolt told the NZ Herald he was actually just ducking down to the dairy for some milk.
"I was just going to the shop," he said.
Mr Shadbolt said the scooter was his, bought after his four-year-old got a scooter last Christmas and he found he couldn't keep up, the NZ Herald reported.
