A man is in a critical condition after a shooting in Onehunga, Auckland.

A witness told 1 NEWS the victim was shot with a shotgun. They have since been transferred to Auckland Hospital where police say he is now in a serious but stable condition after sustaining a "gunshot wound".

Police say a second man was found to have suffered moderate facial injuries before being taken from the scene to Middlemore Hospital.

Police were called to the shooting at 5:40am on Coronation Rd at Old Mangere Bridge and have the registration number of the offending vehicle. They are now working to locate it.

1 NEWS spoke to a local neighbour, who said there was a loud noise and partying from a park near Mangere Bridge around 4am.

The partygoers have been held by police for questioning with enquiries ongoing to locate the offender or offenders involved.

Police have cordoned off the bridge, which runs parallel to the South-Western motorway and a scene examination is under way. Cordons are in place while police staff work in the area.

Fishermen have been asked to leave their boats this morning as it is now a crime scene.
