Seven people have died in road smashes since Friday.

A man has died at the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Kawakawa, Northland, this afternoon.

Four other people were airlifted to Whangarei Hospital — two with serious injuries.

The crash occurred at about 4.30pm. Multiple people were trapped after two vehicles rolled, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1 NEWS.

A stretch State Highway 1 was closed for several hours as emergency personnel attended the scene, but the road has since been opened.

Meanwhile, State Highway 60 in the South Island's Tasman district was also blocked off this afternoon as emergency responders attended a serious crash.

Six people were taken to hospital, some with serious injuries, after a two-vehicle crash on SH 60 at Redwood Valley, also known as the Coastal Highway.

In addition, two people were injured - one seriously - after a car slammed into a lamp post on Auckland's Mount Wellington Highway this evening, a police spokesperson has confirmed to 1 NEWS.

Diversions are being put in place between Waipuna and Hamlin roads. Motorists have been told to expect delays.

Today's crashes come just one day after four motorcyclists died in a span of four hours on New Zealand roads - prompting a plea from police to drive safely and look out for others.
