One person dead after crash in Wellsford that's blocked State Highway 1 in both directions

One person has died in a crash on State Highway 1 just south of Wellsford this afternoon.

Police said the accident occurred shortly after 12.30pm near Centennial Park Rd.

State Highway 1 is blocked in both directions in the town north of Auckland.

Aside from the one person who died at the scene, multiple injuries have also been reported, however the extent of those are not yet known. 

Northbound traffic is being diverted through Centennial Park Rd and southbound traffic is being diverted through SH16.

Motorist are warned to expect delays if traveling through the area. 

The fatality comes just hours after the Easter weekend road toll period ended in which six people died.
