One missing from stolen car in river

A person is missing after a stolen car was driven into a river in Nelson.

Police say they found the car in Maitai River about 4pm today.

One occupant had fled but was tracked down by a police dog handler soon afterwards.

The other occupant had not been found and there was a possibility they were still in the water, police said.

Specialists in swift water rescues have been called to the river, which is described as swollen.
