One Auckland train line reopens following fear fire-damaged building could collapse onto train tracks

October 27, 2017

Thirteen emergency crews were called to Penrose.

Auckland Transport has reopened one of the two Southern and Eastern train lines that were forced to close this morning over fears a fire damaged building may collapse onto the tracks.

The Fire Service responded to an alarm activation at Humes Pipeline Systems on Great South Road last night and found a fire in the centre of a building.

Humes Pipeline Systems General Manager Becky Lloyd said the company is assessing the fire damaged building today and is "working to minimise disruption to customers by using nearby Auckland sales centres, including Takanini, Henderson and Albany."

"No staff were on site and no one was injured," Ms Lloyd said.

Auckland Transport cancelled services running between Westfield and New Market due to the building being located next to train lines, near Penrose train station.

Services on the Onehunga line were also suspended but have since resumed after 10am today.

Auckland Transport spokesperson Mark Hannan told 1 NEWS the second line will be reopening for full service from 3pm.

Fire communications confirmed to 1 NEWS that 13 appliances attended the fire last night and four stayed at the scene overnight.

Vision from the scene shows at least two aerial firefighting units deployed, and smoke and flames coming from the site.
