Amnesty International's New Zealand's Grant Bayldon is calling for action.

The New Zealand government have announced they will be giving a further $2.5 million for humanitarian assistance in response to the crisis in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

In a statement released today Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced the extra funding which will bring the total amount provided by New Zealand to $4 million.

"The New Zealand government is very concerned with the violence and humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State and we continue to urge the Myanmar government to do all it can to safeguard those affected.

"The $2.5m in humanitarian assistance will provide protection and assistance for those who have fled the violence in Rakhine state to Bangladesh," Mr Peters said.

The statement outlines where some of the new funding will be allocated, with $500,000 going to the World Food Programme and $1 million to the UN Population Fund.

More than 600,000 Rohingya, from northern Rakhine, have fled to Bangladesh since fighting broke out in the region at the start of August.
