'Number of children at the address' - Police say victim's children at home during time of Greymouth shooting

October 23, 2017

Police confirmed in a press conference this afternoon mother Hayley Williams was the victim of yesterday's shooting.

Police have captured the person they believe is responsible for the fatal shooting of a Greymouth mother at a marae in Hokitika.

West Coast area commander Inspector Mel Aitken said the public helped to locate the suspect near the Arahura Marae, where he was arrested peacefully after giving himself up.

Police haven't laid any charges, but confirmed the person they have in custody was the man they had been hunting since yesterday afternoon.

The woman was shot at a house in Marsden Rd yesterday afternoon, sparking an Armed Offenders Squad call out and an appeal for the public to report suspicious activity.

Police say the search continues for the suspect in the fatal shooting.

Police say the victim has yet to be formally identified, but confirmed her to be Hayley Williams, 43.

Police were also questioned on whether or not there were any children present at the Marsden Rd address at the time of the shooting to which they replied there were a number of children present, some of which were Ms Williams' children.

No one else is being sought in relation to the shooting and police say it's not a domestic related incident.

The suspect is known to police and has been based in Greymouth.
