It is not obvious how Government will 'crack the problem' of Pike River re-entry, says Bill English

The Opposition leader said it would be a challenge to exempt the dangers of Pike River from workplace laws.

Occupied re-entry of Pike River Mine is going to be a "challenge", says Bill English.

On TVNZ1's Breakfast this morning, the National Party leader said he is "yet to see how Andrew Little and the government are going to crack the problem of manned re-entry".

The Minister for Pike River re-entry says he wants to give families the confidence they’re taking re-entry seriously.

Yesterday Mr Little, the Minister of Pike River re-entry, met with families of some of the 29 men killed in the 2010 mine explosion.

Both sides have agreed that a legal entity needs to be established to take control of the project, which cabinet is expected to make a decision on in the next week.

Mr English said it wasn't obvious where the responsibility would lie of the safety of any person entering Pike River Mine.

"It may be the government is proposing exempt this very dangerous workplace from the workplace safety laws, that will be a a challenge as well."

The video was captured on a camera lowered into the mine four days after the first explosion in 2010.

"I'd be surprised if the Government has got any different, much simpler solutions than the solutions which have been looked at already."

Mr English said under National governments, the families "they haven't always got what they wanted but they were certainly listened to".
