'Not on my agenda' - Jacinda Ardern shuts down the idea of a New Zealand republic

April 20, 2018

Ms Ardern said it seemed like it was only the media who were interested in the topic, and that the Commonwealth is valuable to New Zealand.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the issue of New Zealand becoming a republic is "not on my agenda" after she met with Queen Elizabeth II in London.

Ms Ardern is in England for the Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and met and exchanged gifts with the Queen overnight, New Zealand time.

She said she believes most New Zealanders don't care about the issue of New Zealand separating from The Commonwealth and that it will not be something she works on.

"I've always been very clear when asked about the issue of New Zealand becoming a republic - this is not on my agenda," Ms Ardern said.

The Prime Minister said she admires the Queen because she has lived her life - and raised her children - in the public eye.

"During the election campaign it did not come up once with a voter ... I've had the media ask me about it, but beyond that I don't think it's an issue New Zealanders are particularly worried about.

"It's something that I think, over time, New Zealanders may consider, but I don't think it will be any time soon.

"I think this is a very important organisation we are a part of and, increasingly in these times, having a chance to talk with other countries about goals we share collectively is becoming of greater importance."
