'Not many boys are going to be able to grow a ridiculous moustache'- Kiwi schools refuse to budge for Movember

1NEWS' Breakfast Club debate whether NZ schools should relax their clean-shaven policy for "Movember" fundraising.

If Kiwi schools relax their clean-shaven policy for "Movember" fundraising, will it lead to ridiculous year book photos, or genuine student engagement with social issues?

1 NEWS' Breakfast club debated whether students should be allowed to grow facial hair during November, and despite acknowledging schools' concerns, most thought it was the right way to go.

"Not many boys are going to be able to grow a ridiculous moustache in just a few weeks, seriously," The Spinoff editor Simon Wilson said.

Ygnacio Cervio takes his beard pretty seriously, and he's not alone.

"Maybe it's also a great thing for their learning, if it's a way in which kids can engage in a social issue that's important, get them thinking about it, get them talking about it, it becomes a learning opportunity in the classroom doesn't it?"

Lifestyle blogger Simone Anderson was more conflicted on the issue.

"I'm in two minds about this. I grew up in a really strict private school and we had all these rules in place and I just sort of feel they've set me up really well for later in life - really good discipline," Anderson said.

"But also I see the amazing cause and I see what the publicity could do for it and I think why not? Why should the boys not be allowed? And it's not going to affect their learning in any way."

Movember is an annual event involving growing mustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide.
