Northland building that stores hospital medical supplies closed after asbestos contamination

The building that stores medical supplies for hospitals and some clinics across Northland has been contaminated with asbestos and has closed down.

Asbestos was found in the rafters of the Central Store at Whangarei Hospital.

The Northland District Health Board says tests indicate the asbestos is not airborne, but staff are taking a precautionary approach and all unsealed products have been disposed of.

The DHB say staff that have been accessing the building have not been exposed to any harm.

The DHB says it is not experiencing any shortage in medical supplies and a temporary supplies site has been set up in the interim.
