Somali Islamist group Al-Shabaab have claimed responsibility.

A New Zealand national is among 12 people who were arrested near the Kenyan-Somalia border in a crackdown on terror suspects, according to a report published today.

Sulub Warfaa, 36, was arrested with two passports bearing different names, Kenyan publication Daily Nation reported. The other passport had the name Ramadhan Yusuf.

Another suspect, Sakawawedin Abdullahi Mohammed, 33, was arrested with an Ethiopian passport.

"The two were heading to Garissa from Dajabula in a white Toyota Hilux Double Cabin," Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet told the news agency.

The other 10 suspects were arrested during an operation at the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Garissa County, the publication reported.

Police officers have intensified their crackdown on terror suspects and their aides since the Dusit D2 terror attack that left 21 people dead and several others injured.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was providing consular assistance to a New Zealander who has been detained in Kenya.

New Zealand Police also confirmed the agency is aware of the arrest in Kenya and is liaising with its partner agencies.
