New Zealand net migration decreases, trending down after 2016 high

Net migration to New Zealand is reportedly trending downwards, with a drop of about 10,400 for the year ended November 2018 compared to November 2017. 

Provisional estimates from Statistics NZ showed annual net migration was down from 53,800 in November 2018 to 43,400. 

In 2016 annual net migration sat at 58,191. 

Migrant arrivals were up one per cent at 144,000 and migrant departures were up 13 per cent at 100,600.

Of the annual net migration, November 2018 year saw 38,100 arrivals from New Zealand citizens, 15,000 from China, 14,400 from India, 7,400 from the Philippines and 7,300 from the UK. 

Of the 100,00 migrant departures, 45,900 New Zealand citizens left, with departures from China the second highest at 10,400, and the UK at 6,400. 

The latest provisional estimates were the first since the departure cards were removed, with passport data now used to measure the time spent in and out of New Zealand. 

A long-term migrant arrival is someone who did not live in New Zealand previously but spent 12 out of 16 months in New Zealand, a long-term migrant departure is someone who previously lived in New Zealand but spent 12 of 16 months out of the country.
