Local media outlet Okezone reported three people were taking a selfie on the edge of a cliff at 10.45pm yesterday (Bali), about 3.45am this morning New Zealand time.

A huge wave was said to have hit the 23-year-old New Zealand man, a German woman and an Indonesian woman.

The news site said they were all swept off the cliff into the sea, with the two women surviving the fall, before being taken to local Sanglah hospital.

AP reports just the German woman fell into the sea, and the New Zealand man jumped in to save her.

The man has not been found.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was "providing consular assistance to the family of the New Zealander, and as part of this the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta is following up with local Police".
