New PM-elect gives Kiwis insight into what new government will look like

Ms Ardern wouldn't give too much away on portfolios, but has opened up about policy.

Jacinda Ardern and the Green Party have given Kiwis an insight into their new government today.

While prime minister-elect Jacinda Ardern hasn't given too much away about portfolios, she has opened up about policy.

"I preside over a government that is made up of three independent parties... Who have built consensus around the issues we will collectively pursue. The fact we will work together collabouratively does not diminish the identity of those parties," she said on TV3's The Nation.

Ms Ardern said the new government was about making sure issues like homelessness, child poverty and wages are addressed.

Media were allowed to film the opening minutes before Jacinda started dishing out ministerial portfolios.

As a result of the coalition negotiations, Labour has given away numerous ministerial portfolios.

Some of Labour's policies are likely to change, like the water tax, which NZ First's Winston Peters was against.

"You'll see in our final agreement, the consensus we reached on that area. But it's fair to say Mr Peters advocated strongly on that issue," she said.

However Labour's immigration policy, which cut numbers by 20,000-30,000 from last year's 72,402, stays the same.

"As a result of these negotiations, Labour's policy remains unchanged," Ms Ardern said.
