A man has been arrested after abuse was allegedly hurled at Muslims outside Christchurch's Al Noor Mosque on Wednesday.

Police say the charges against the 33-year-old are yet to be confirmed but he will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow.

Worshippers at the mosque on Deans Ave, one of the sites of last month's Christchurch terrorist attack, were left shaken after allegedly being abused by a man wearing a Trump t-shirt.

A police picture showed the accused wearing a shirt labelled 'Trump for New Zealand' near the mosque talking with an officer before he left the scene.

Earlier today police said "Two armed officers were outside the mosque at the time, we are reviewing our response to this incident".

Police this afternoon released further images of the man as they appealed for information from the public.

Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price tonight thanked the public "for their assistance in locating the man".
