New Greens co-leader Marama Davidson believes her ‘connections to grassroots groups and communities’ will benefit the party

April 9, 2018

The new co-leader of the Green Party sat down with TVNZ1’s Breakfast today.

Newly appointed co-leader of the Green Party Marama Davidson believes her "connections to grassroots groups and communities" will be beneficial for the Greens.

Ms Davidson won the majority of the votes against fellow MP Julie Anne Genter to take up the role alongside James Shaw yesterday.

Speaking on TVNZ1's Breakfast today Ms Davidson says one thing that differentiates her from Ms Genter are: "My connections to the grassroots groups and communities who are pushing for the changes that we need".

"Also as a non minister co-leader I'm able to focus on achieving the other priorities that we have agreed to in our confidence and supply arrangement in this Government."

Ms Davidson is humbled and honoured to be in the position and says it's also beneficial she's more to "the left" of the political spectrum.

She says she wants to be an advocate for the people. To be on the streets and in the halls of power "fighting enough for people to have dignified lives".

"Fighting to clean up rivers, making sure that Middlemore Hospital gets its proper funding, that's what I stand for and that's what the Greens stand for."
