New cycle lanes unveiled for major Wellington roads

April 20, 2018

Wellington City Council has unveiled concept images for three new two-way cycleways along major Wellington roads.

City Councillors yesterday agreed to changes to Oriental Parade, Evans Bay Parade and Thorndon Quay which Mayor Justin Lester said balanced the needs of the thousands of people using those routes.

The Oriental Parade cycle path is completely new, and would make the section of footpath next to the sea wall between Herd Street and Freyberg pool pedestrian-only.

Croc bikes would also need to use the new cycleway.

Parking along this section will be adjusted, with no loss in numbers, and the median strip for turning traffic will be retained.

Detailed designs for all three cycle paths will now be worked on by the Council as will construction plans and independent safety audits.

Work on the cycle paths is expected to begin towards the end of the year.
