New Bill will allow Kiwi consumers to know exactly where their food came from

Consumer NZ’s Jessica Wilson told Breakfast not all foods are included only those that are fresh, frozen and considered minimally processed.

The Green Party's Country of Origin Labelling Bill passed last night, allowing consumers to find out where their food came from.

Consumer NZ's Jessica Wilson told TVNZ's Breakfast not all foods are included, only those that are fresh, frozen and considered minimally processed.

This includes frozen fruit and vegetables, seafood and meat, including ham and bacon.

She says they have been campaigning for better food labelling for 10 years and have a lot of support from consumers.

"Seven out of 10 consumers back it."

But she says the bill doesn't go as far as they would like.

"It doesn't go as far as we want and we'll be pushing for it to extend to other food products, but it's a good first step.

"We'll be looking to the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs to extend the range of the bill next year to push it to include other food products."

If shops and supermarkets do not comply with the law they will get a fine.
