New Anzac childrens book celebrates the dogs, horses, cats and kangaroos of war

Author Maria Gill has written a book about the dogs, horses, cats and even kangaroos of war.

A new childrens book celebrates the role played in the wars by non-human Anzacs - including horses, dogs, cats and even kangaroos.

Maria Gill, author of Anzac Animals, said while Anzac Day was always a good time to remember human sacrifices, the animals who joined our soldiers are often overlooked.

"The animals just gave unconditional love, and they were just so loyal to the men, so yeah, I thought I've just got to write this story," Ms Gill said.

New Zealand took about 10,000 horses to war, and only five returned, Ms Gill said, "and the men were absolutely devastated their best friend was not returning with them".

Some Australian regiments also took kangaroos overseas as mascots - kangaroos and even possums.

"The Egyptians were absolutely fascinated with the kangaroos - they were watching in awe," she said.
