A scene examination is continuing at a Christchurch home while 20 investigators search and gather evidence following the suspected murder of a woman last night.
Police were called to a property in Avonhead Road in the early hours of this morning.
Detective Sergeant Michael Ford said Police believe this to be an "isolated incident" and that there are "no safety concerns for the general public."
"A scene examination is continuing and 20 investigators are involved in gathering evidence, speaking with witnesses and liaising with the victim's family," Mr Ford said in a statement this afternoon.
"A formal identification of the victim is still to be completed."
Neighbour Neil McLeod's home backs onto the property and told 1 NEWS "You would never think it would happen around here. I was shocked about it because our house backs onto where it happened but we never heard anything last night."
However he says he was asleep by 10.30pm when other neighbours have reported hearing a party and then loud bangs like gunshots or fireworks going off.
Another neighbour, Juanita Yaszilyko says, "My thoughts are with the people involved."
Her home is inside the police cordon that was set up early this morning.
She says "That's the scariest thing considering my children walk past here to go to school every day."
Police say they would like to hear from anyone who was in the Avonhead road area at around midnight and noticed anything out of the ordinary to contact police on 03 363 7400 or anonymously on CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
