The HMNZS Wellington has cut short a scientific mission to the Kermadec Arc because of the cyclone threat and is planning to return to Auckland.

The navy patrol vessel warned the skipper of the French flagged yacht, the Nerville yesterday about the need for it to sail away from the approaching storm.

But our reporter on board the vessel, Renee Graham says it appears the yacht, which is about 70 kilometres south of Raoul Island has engine problems, no emergency beacon and damage to its sail.

The commander of the HMNZS Wellington, Lieutenant Commander Graham Maclean is planning to take a motor boat to the Nerville shortly to convince the sailor to leave his vessel behind.
