National's first female MP of Pacific Island descent fought back tears as she thanked family during her maiden statement to Parliament this evening.

Agnes Loheni talked about her Samoan roots and the incredible journey that led her into a career in politics.

Ms Loheni has entered Parliament to fill the vacant seat left by retiring MP Chris Finlayson.
