National pledges to extend paid parental leave to 22 weeks

National will extend paid parental leave to 22 weeks as part of its parents and newborn package.

National leader Bill English has today unveiled his party's new paid parental leave policy, extending it from 18 to 22 weeks.

It made the announcement on the campaign trail in Nelson.

Included in the package will be a clause to allow both parents to take some of the 22 weeks off at the same time so they can be at home with their baby together.

Critics say it's cynical as Bill English blocked it just last year.

"I've spent 15 months as a house husband myself." Bill English says.

Paid parental leave is currently 18 weeks.

There would also be help for those undergoing IVF treatment, while there would be extra dental support for pregnant women.

A bill to extend paid leave was withdrawn last year but critics say it's a huge issue for young New Zealanders.
