"Initial indications are that the cyclist is injured," the spokesperson earlier told 1 NEWS.

In an update, police said the cyclist has since been taken to hospital.

Napier Boys' High School deputy headmaster Bruce Smith confirmed to 1 NEWS the boy is a student at the school before it released a statement later in the afternoon.

“Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time, and we will continue to support them in any way we can,” headmaster Jarred Williams said.

“Our students, staff and the wider school community have been informed of the incident. Support from the school counselling team and the Ministry of Education’s Emergency Team is in place for those who may need assistance.”

He said the school was assisting authorities with investigations.

The road is closed and there are diversions in place at the intersection of State Highway 51 and Te Awa Ave, and at Warren Street/Marine Parade.
