A head on collision along SH1 near the town of Amberley has left two 16-year-olds dead this morning.

Police have released the names of the two teenagers who died in a head-on crash on State Highway One near the town of Amberley in North Canterbury yesterday.

They were 16-year-olds Dexter Morgan Barham and Burgundy-Rose Eden Brown from Christchurch.

The crash happened just north of Amberley yesterday morning, after one vehicle crossed the centre line.

Police say they extend their sympathies to the teens' families and friends at this time.

Shirley Boys High School principal, Tim Grocott told 1 NEWS Dexter Barham left Shirley Boys High at the end of last year to start an apprenticeship.

"Things like this effect the school very deeply and to hear of these young people lose their lives is just awful," Mr Grocott said.

He also said the surviving passenger in the white Nissan Silvia involved in the crash is a current year 12 student at Shirley Boys.

Mr Grocott said the young man suffered head injuries but is in a stable condition, surrounded by family.

Two men involved in a crash were this morning also in a stable condition in hospital.

Police say the Serious Crash Unit investigation continues.
