The identity of the teenager boy struck and killed by a train in West Auckland yesterday has been released.
Keenan Matthes, 16, of Ranui died after being hit by the train at Ranui Train Station.
The boy was wearing headphones when he crossed the tracks around 6.55am yesterday.
He was unaware the train was approaching, Senior Sergeant Richie Thompson said yesterday.
Family members who were looking for the boy after he was late arriving home saw emergency services and learned of his death at the scene.
"This is the scenario that every parent fears the most and we extend our utmost sympathies to the boy's family," said Mr Thompson.
"It was a very emotional scene for all involved."
The boy's death will be referred to the Coroner.
