The cause of a loud bang that shook Wellington's eastern suburbs last night remains a mystery.

Strathmore residents have told ONE News they heard a "huge explosion" that shook homes and set off car alarms at about 10.15pm.

"It was crazy," says Amanda Barlow. "Our neighbours and everybody just piled out onto the street to see. I've never heard anything like it.

"It was like a barbecue gas bottle blowing up right in front of you."

Police and the Fire Service are unsure of its origin, but police did say they were called to a brawl in Strathmore last night and had received calls about the "explosion".

Ms Barlow, who lives on Ahuriri St, says she saw several police cars, both marked and unmarked, as well as what "looked like a bomb squad" vehicle.
