Motutapu Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, opens to the public again today.

Access to the island, where there are popular walking tracks and a campground, was closed in April after Cyclone Debbie caused slips and washouts.

"We're reopening Motutapu to the public because the island is now safe for them to return," DOC manager Keith Gell says.

The roads, campground and most of the tracks are open with the risk of further slips having eased.

However, campsites have been reduced from 152 to 38 and the Rotary Centennial Track and Mullet Bay Track remain closed.
