Motorist lucky to be alive after tree branch 'missile' nearly impales him on way to Te Puke

A motorist was lucky to escape serious injury after a tree branch flew through the windscreen of his car, hitting his chest near the Tauranga expressway yesterday morning.

The man captured images of the aftermath from the terrifying incident, which were then posted to the Facebook group Motorway Community by one of his work colleagues today.

According to the co-worker, the driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, was on his way to Te Puke around 11am when part of a branch flew from the undercarriage of an empty logging truck ahead of him.

The "missile"-like projectile crashed through with such force that it hit the driver's chest.

The driver ended up in a ditch and was left with shoulder damage and seven stitches from the wound left by the branch.

He wasn't tailgating the logging truck at the time of the incident and was at least 80 metres behind, according to the Facebook post.

Police attended the scene, but the man involved in the accident believes the driver of the logging truck didn't witness the carnage that took place behind them.

The pictures were posted online as a warning to others to be vigilant around logging trucks on NZ roads.
