A 28-year-old motorcyclist who died in Auckland last night had been followed by police prior to the crash, authorities revealed today.
The motorcyclist was spotted by the police Eagle helicopter driving erratically in Remuera, running red lights at high speeds, at around 9.48pm, police said in a statement.
The helicopter kept sight of the driver while two police cars, one unmarked, observed the vehicle from a distance, police said.
No lights and sirens were activated, and a police pursuit was not carried out, according to authorities.
The driver lost control of the motorbike on Portland Road a short time later, after which emergency services attempted to save the man. He died at the scene, according to police.
The man's next of kin are still being advised. The Serious Crash Unit has attended the scene.
