Motorcycle rider dies at Meremere Dragway

A motorcylist has died after coming off their bike at the Meremere Drag Raceway this afternoon near Hampton downs in Waikato.

Police confirmed the death and said the crash took place about 2.40pm during a competition.

It's understood the rider was near the end of a straight line quarter mile run when they came off.

Meremere Dragway posted on their Facebook saying "it's a very sad day and we are postponing today's meeting due to a racing incident to a later date.

"Thank you for your patience at this time."

Facebook page Motohub posted that the rider came off while travelling about 167mph (268km/h), and said they were "well known and a regular".
