More than 2000 people sign petition to have speed limit lowered at Kawakawa's notorious Three Bridges

February 18, 2019

The road is just north of Kawakawa.

A small community in Northland has gathered more than 2000 signatures for a petition seeking to have the speed limit lowered on a notorious stretch of road.

Locals say if you get enough speed going over the three bridges north of Kawakawa you can get airborne, and while it may be fun it’s claiming lives.

The speed limit on this stretch of road, State Highway One, between Kawakawa and Moerewa is 100 km/h.

One resident Alice Rule says it is ridiculous that it is a 100 kilometre zone.

"There’s no way that you can drive safely at that speed."

People have died on this piece of road including a motorcyclist that was killed just last month while overtaking traffic.

Ms Rule says she has had a few close calls herself. She wants to see the speed limit dropped and is fed up by the lack of action by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).

"It's costing Northlanders lives and we cannot keep blaming driver error so we created a petition," Ms Rule says.

The petition has almost 2,500 signiatures and it’s going to Parliament.

"It’s a big petition for a little community and I think it sets a precendent for all other dangerous fatal roads in Northland that this process needs to happen in order for NZTA to start listening."

NZTA says it understands the community's concerns and will be engaging with communities across Northland about safe speeds later in the year.
