More serious mould and water damage uncovered at Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital

March 23, 2018

The development leaves the Counties Manukau DHB facing big questions over how buildings have fallen into such bad condition.

1 NEW's can reveal yet another wing at Middlemore Hospital has serious mould and water damage.

The Colvin Complex where mental health physio and rehabilitation patients go for care is another site needing major repairs.

The Counties Manukau district health board now have at least six sites in need of repair.

Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, Ian Powell, says there's been a lack of transparency by the district health board over the severity of the situation.

Experts say the water damage, toxic mould and rotting timber is a risk to the public.

The Manukau DHB has been ordered to come up with an urgent plan, with repairs scheduled to start next month that could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Backlogged patient care is another concern, but officials are confident safety isn't a risk.
