More algae blooms found in Lake Taupo swimming sites

December 10, 2017

Five sites, including the main lake front, have been identified as being contaminated.

More algae blooms found in Lake Taupo are being tested.

Algal mats and surface water bloom samples have been collected from Kuratau Beach, Mission Bay, Motutere Bay, Hatepe, Halletts Bay and Whareroa South Beach.

Waikato Regional Council says the blooms were found during an inspection of southeastern Lake Taupo swimming sites this weekend.

The samples are being analysed by scientists to determine whether they are toxic species.

In the meantime, members of the public are urged to exercise caution and to avoid entering algae-affected areas.

The swimming leg of the 70.3 Taupo half Ironman on Saturday was scrapped because of algae. Testing confirmed algae in Five Mile Bay, Acacia Bay, Whakaipo Bay and Kinloch Beach.
