An extension to one of New Zealand's most well-known churches in central Auckland has won big at the National Architecture Awards.

The Bishop Selwyn chapel has opened its doors to worshippers - with a large wall of glass.

The structure, which sits at the back of Parnell's Holy Trinity Cathedral, was designed to resemble a backyard garden.

Designers Tim Hay and Jeff Fearon, of Fearon Hay Architects, are off to Berlin to see if they will take home an international honour for their work at the World Architecture Festival.
