It's possibly the last place you'd expect to find a brand new million dollar museum.
But despite its remote location, and with a population of just 100 locals, the small Southland town of Waikaia has done exactly that, opening up its new Switzer's Museum this afternoon.
Chairperson Mairi Dickson, who campaigned for 30 years for this day, is relieved to see the final product.
"This is a nice little town, it's very well-kept. If we want something, we'll go and get it," Ms Dickson said.
Along with several lofty donations and grants, the town has also pitched in with its fair share of fundraising, with locals also chipping in with much of its construction.
"There's been parts slightly harder than others, but we've had a lot of fun, lot of laughs, bit of a struggle, but a wonderful story," Southland District Council roving museum officer Jo Massey said.
The museum will operate seven days a week during the summer months, with many tourists expected to enter its doors.
