Mike Pero Real Estate ditches plastic advertising signs for aluminium composites

September 1, 2018

This is one real estate company fighting the war against plastic.

Plastic bags, disposable coffee cups and plastic straws are all bad for our environment - and so are plastic signs.

So far this year, 79,000 properties have been listed for sale in New Zealand, adding up to 79,000 plastic signs or corflutes – with at least as many plastic slogans.

However, not all signs are single-use.

Mike Pero Real Estate are ditching plastic signs for ones made of aluminium, and the plastic is limited to just the sticker.

The company's founder, Mike Pero, said, "You've got to think, well, there's a lot of plastic going down the gurgler".

Mr Pero says his company has saved "between 100 and 200 tonnes of plastic a year" since they started ditching plastic signs.

Associate Environment Minister Eugenie Sage called it "a really good initiative because aluminium is recyclable".

"Markets for aluminium have held up, whereas corflute is a single use plastic, so I would encourage other companies to think about how they can reduce their use of single-use plastics," Ms Sage said.
