Radio host Mike Hosking has crashed his $130,000 Alfa Romeo sports car during a track racing day - and has no insurance on it.

His wife Kate Hawkesby posted on Instagram with pictures of the damage, asking "does anyone know a good panelbeater?"

Hosking recently made comments about the lowering of speed limits on public roads, saying they were not the answer for New Zealand's road deaths.

"Since joining Hampton Downs and taking my car round a track at 220km/h I have not crashed, will not crash, and have concluded I am vastly less likely to be in trouble on a track than I am on a road," he wrote in the NZ Herald.

"Why? Because there are no idiots ... there is respect and concentration and rules are adhered to, and - oh the irony - ever safer cars."

The Alfa Romeo 4C Mr Hosking was driving is a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo with about 237HP under the bonnet.

Ms Hawkesby reported that her husband was OK after the crash.
