Melanoma mole on woman removed thanks to sharp-eyed Nelson hairdresser

November 17, 2017

A sharp-eyed Nelson hairdresser spotted a suspicious-looking mole on a customer's head, which turned out to have contained melanoma.

Zinc hair salon owner Andrea Ranieri told client Emma Saunders to get a large mole on the back of her head looked at while he was washing her hair, the Nelson Mail reports.

Ms Saunders got the mole removed, which turned out to have melanoma but had not made it into her blood stream.

"I feel grateful, grateful it was found, grateful that people measured it and took it seriously and grateful that it's out," Ms Saunders said.

It is not the first time Mr Ranieri has spotted dangerous-looking moles, with five others having moles removed after the hairdresser noticed them.

"We put a lot of effort into raising awareness of putting sunscreen on the face, but we don't think about the head a lot," he told Nelson Mail.
