Meet the fashion conscious Wellington cockatoo who's not letting health problems cramp his style

Ipo has lost most of his feathers so his owner came up with a colourful wardrobe solution.

A Wellington cockatoo called Ipo and his "mate" Andrea Cootes love dressing up.

"He puts his heads through his ponchos, he loves his ponchos," Ms Cootes said.

She said the 43-year-old bird was given to her by a friend more than 20 years ago.

"Ipo and I love each other very much, don’t we darling … when he gets a little bit too amorous at times, I tell him, "Hold on a minute Ipo, I’m not a bird".

Ms Cootes' friend made Ipo’s first poncho years ago, after leather vests failed to keep him warm.

Now another friend is behind the sewing machine, with the collection now sporting 10 pieces.

Ipo has a long term blood virus which infects his feather, leaving him with little plumage.

He also has arthritis, a broken toe and broken wings.

But that doesn’t stop him from being the star of Ms Cootes’ art classes, Art with Ipo, and travelling everywhere with her around town.

Ms Cootes said he had a health scare earlier this year but has made a full recovery after she cared for him, and could live longer than her.

Sulphur-crested cockatoos in captivity can live for between 65-80 years.
