Meet the catfish killers trying to stop species taking over New Zealand waterways

November 4, 2019

Despite thousands being caught, they continue to spread.

Plentiful fish stocks aren't usually a problem, but in the central North Island a plague of catfish is causing a headache for local environmentalists.

The invasive species was first discovered in Lake Rotoiti in the Bay of Plenty three years ago.

Female catfish can carry up to 6000 eggs at a time, meaning the population has since boomed.

Seven Sharp's Tamati Rimene-Sproat investigates those on the frontline trying to stop the invasion in the video above.
