'Meaningful step towards a better future' - Z gas stations phasing out single-use plastic bags by 2018

November 10, 2017

It is the latest move by a big supermarket chain on the use of plastic shopping bags.

Z petrol stations are jumping on board with supermarkets around the country that have recently announced they are ditching single-use plastic bags.

All Z service stations will phase out single-use plastic bags by June 2018 due to growing support from Kiwis to ban them.

Z's sustainability manger Gerri Ward said that the move was the right thing to do.

"We may be a fuel company, but we’re determined to be at the heart of the sustainability solution, and doing something simple like no longer having plastic bags available seems like another small but meaningful step towards a better future," she said.

"We will take the two and a half million plastic bags we give out each year completely out of circulation."

New World supermarkets, as well as Countdown, have also pledged to phase out the use of single-use plastic bags in its stores by the end of 2018.
