Commuters between Wellington and Masterton this morning will face disruptions after a train derailed in the Masterton yard yesterday afternoon.

The derailment, which involved a locomotive and a carriage, occurred as the empty train was travelling to Masterton Station to collect passengers.

It is not yet known what caused the derailment.

MetLink said in a statement that a crane will be needed to lift the locomotive and carriage back onto the tracks, but they hoped to have the train back in service by the afternoon peak.

As a result, this morning’s services will be replaced by buses between Masterton and Solway stations while trains will run between Renall Street and Wellington Stations.

The 5.46am, 6.20am, 6.47am and 10.30am services will be replaced by bus between Masterton and Solway.

Trains will run between Renall Street Station but passengers at Masterton Station will need to bus to Solway Station to catch the train.

The 8.21am service from Wellington to Masterton will run to Renall Street.

Passengers travelling through to Masterton Station can catch a shuttle bus at Solway Station.
