The embattled Taratahi Institute of Agriculture has been placed into voluntary liquidation.

The Masterton facility has been facing financial pressures for a number of years and yesterday was officially liquidated.

In a statement it said "despite both government subsidies and cash flows from its farming operations, the costs of educating each student still exceeded the funding based on its operating model".

Its chairwoman Mavis Mullins says "it is very distressing for the staff and Board of Taratahi which would have celebrated 100 years in 2019".

"Our main concerns are for our students, staff, animal welfare and our creditors and partners."

Taratahi taught more than 2800 students in 2018, has 250 staff and contractors, and manages and owns eight farms.

It offers a range of full time courses, diplomas and a schools’ programme.
